5 TIPS FOR GETTING MOTIVATED TO CLEAN

Proven techniques to help you overcome procrastination when it comes time to do the chores

How do you find the energy to clean your home?

When you've worked all week and just want to relax for once, cleaning doesn't even sound remotely appealing.

The good news is that there is a way to help motivate your brain to take the actions it needs. With a little strategic planning and some mood regulation, you can help yourself powered up to tackle your chores.

Without further delay, let's jump in!

1. Mastering Your Mindset
Cleaning is a hassle because of how we allow ourselves to feel and think about it.

Most people think "Oh this will take so long and requires so much energy!" This kind of thinking causes an emotional trigger of feeling depleted, frazzled, empty and apathetic.

When you challenge your thinking and reframe it to something like "It will only take 20 minutes, I have enough energy for that", it helps encourage positive feelings like confidence, empowerment, determination and intentionality.

Take some time to adjust your thinking and regulate your mood. Then move on to step 2.

2. Scribble a Plan of Action
We say scribble because this plan of action doesn't have to be sophisticated.

First, jot down a few general areas that you know you need to clean. This might include the bathroom, laundry or kitchen.

Second, break each of these areas down into smaller tasks. For example, put under bathroom that you need to clean the shower, toilet, sink and floors.

Third, write down which supplies you'll need for each area. If you haven't already, gather the needed supplies into a caddy where everything is easily accessible.

Fourth, write down how long each smaller task will take. For example, put that the toilet will take 2 minutes, the shower will take 10 minutes, and the sink area will take 4 minutes.

Five, put a deadline on each general area to clean. This will help to hold yourself accountable for when they need to be completed.

3. Break it up over time
Instead of having a "cleaning day" to take care of everything, consider only cleaning one area at a time.

Maybe Monday you focus on cleaning the bathroom, and Wednesday you clean the kitchen.

By breaking these areas up over several days, you lift the heaviness that tends to discourage people from cleaning.

Spreading these tasks out helps make them more achievable and keeps them from feeling so overwhelming.

4. Provide Incentives for Yourself
treating yourself in small ways whenever you complete a chore helps build motivation over time.

The key is to make your reward something that you don't usually do. For example, if you accomplish everything on your cleaning list, order from a food delivery app if that's something you only occasionally do.

Another note is make the reward doable. You don't want to build the habit of cleaning at the cost of your checking account. So instead of an expensive shopping spree every time you do a load of laundry, maybe go see a movie at your local theater when you check off every area on your cleaning list.

5. Use Better Cleaning Supplies
Spend a little extra to buy better performing products to help make cleaning easier.

Although it may cost a little more, consider upgrading to more effective supplies such as rotating scrub brushes, magic erasers or steam cleaners to help reduce the elbow grease.

there are many products at your local retail store or on Amazon that can remove grease, soap scum and other difficult areas much smoother.

This is great because if cleaning feels effective to you, you'll feel more empowered to do it. On the other hand if you're constantly struggling from using poor products, you'll learn to despise cleaning.

6. (Bonus) Hire a House Cleaner to get Caught Up
Sometimes having a person help you is enough to get you motivated to clean.

This is especially true if there are rooms or chores that have been neglected for a while due to the amount of time and effort required.

It's like pressing the reset button. When you have a freshly cleaned home to work with, it can feel more energizing to continue the process yourself.
